Ashley Johnson Responds to Criticism of The Last of Us Season 2
Ashley Johnson—renowned for voicing and performing Ellie in Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II—has addressed fan reactions to HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2. In an interview with The Direct, Johnson acknowledged the series’ “very passionate” fanbase, noting that such intensity can yield both positive and challenging responses.
“Sometimes that passion feels really great, and sometimes it feels not great. But you know, I understand it. I understand loving something so much, and wanting it to be what you want it to be,” she said.
Fan Expectations vs. Creative Integrity
The HBO adaptation introduces numerous departures from the source games. Even before Season 2 premiered, showrunner and writer Craig Mazin anticipated strong backlash. On the subject of fan feedback, Mazin emphasized narrative fidelity over popularity: “We don’t operate to either make people happy on social media or avoid making them upset. We just do what we think is right, and we hope that people come along for the ride and enjoy it.”
Johnson’s Perspective on Reception and Craft
While Johnson declined to engage with specific criticisms of Season 2, she reflected candidly on the universal creative tension between personal investment and audience reception: “It can be hard sometimes, when you are making these things, and on your side of things, you’re passionate about it, and excited about it, and hopefully that those two things can meet. Sometimes they do not. And that’s hard, because I mean, anytime you’re working on anything, you want people to like it, and you want people to love it as much as you.”
She affirmed her deep connection to the franchise across all its forms: “I love The Last of Us in every form, and I am so happy that I get to be a part of that telling of that story.”
Expanding the Story: Anna’s Role and Unrealized Game Concepts
Following her iconic portrayal of Ellie, Johnson portrayed Ellie’s mother, Anna, in Season 1 of the HBO series. Notably, Naughty Dog had previously considered developing downloadable content (DLC) or a spin-off game centered on Anna’s story—intended to deepen the context surrounding Ellie’s birth.
